The crisis-ridden Edappadi Palaniswami-led AIADMK Government may survive for another year, according to its main enemy TTV Dinakaran, who was eased out from the post of deputy general secretary of the party.
Speaking to reporters at Madurai after garlanding the statue of Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar as part of the Thevar Jayanthi celebrations, Dinakaran said that by the time Tamil Nadu celebrates the next Thevar Jayanthi, the State would have a Government envisaged by Amma (late J Jayalalithaa).
Dinakaran had taken a vow that he would bring down the EPS Government before the last week of September 2017. Though he had given an extension of a fortnight’s time to the EPS Government, nothing materialised and Palaniswami continues to take potshots at the rebel leader.
Monday was the birthday-cum-death anniversary of Ramalingam Thevar, one of the founding members of the All India Forward Block who was also a close associate of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. Thevar was a two-term member of the lok Sabha and he died on his 55th birthday on October 30, 1963.
The day is observed by the Thevars of southern Tamil Nadu as Thevar Jayanthi. leaders of all major political parties (except the Communists and Dalit leaders) make a beeline to Madurai to garland the statue of Ramalinga Thevar. late chief minister Jayalalithaa had donated a gold armour weighing 13.5 Kg for decorating the Thevar Statue at Madurai on the Thevar Jayanthi day.
Having failed in his attempts to dethrone Palaniswami from the post of Chief Minister, Dinakaran has changed the deadline he had set to oust the Government. The fate of Palaniswami Government depends on four petitions being heard by the Madras High Court. While three of the petitions are filed by the DMK, the 18 expelled MlAs belonging to the Sasikala/Dinakaran camp has challenged the Speaker’s action of disqualifying them from the House. as members
In a development which may prolong the hearing of the petitions filed by the DMK and the rebel AIADMK MlAs, Justice K Ravichandra Babu of the Madras High Court said on Friday that he would refer all the cases pertaining to the legislature to a larger bench. “since Constitutional issues are involved in all these matters, I am of the view that they have to be heard by a larger bench,” the justice had said on Friday.
The election Commission of India hearing the pleas filed by both the factions of the AIADMK for the Two leaves symbol and the name of the party is expected to pronounce its verdict by November 10. Political commentators are of the view that the faction led by Chief Minister Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam is likely to walk away with the party symbol as they are on a stronger wicket.
The DMK, the principal opposition party, has upped the ante against the AIADMK Government with leader of the opposition MK Stalin increasing the intensity of attacks. Every day he issues statements condemning the Government though the Chief Minister counters the attacks with facts and figures.
