Railway stations to be more disabled-friendly

Friday, 03 February 2017 | PARIDHI KHANDElWAl | New Delhi

Railway stations of the national Capital will now be equipped with more disabled friendly features according to the Union Budget presented on Wednesday. This is the first time that Railway Budget was placed with the Union Budget.

This year Delhi is given an outlay of Rs444 crore as compared to Rs208 crore in the previous year. The Government also promised to make 500 railway stations disabled friendly.

More escalators and lifts might be added to some stations in Delhi in coming months. The main idea behind this is to give the passengers an easy and relaxing experience while they travel.

Anil Saxena (ADGPR) said, “We are trying our level best to make the railways disabled-friendly, though earlier also it was but now we are leaving no stone unturned to make it a feasable place for them.”

He added escalators or lifts will be placed on every platform both up and down and will be there in New and Old Delhi Railway Stations.

Better seating facilities will be provided for the disabled, he said.

When asked, Bipin Kumar, who travels everyday in railway for his work said, it feels really bad when disabled people find it difficult to use railway and it is not necessary that every time some person will have to come and help them.

“Now at least they can come and travel on their own and won’t need a family member or anybody for them to give support,” said Kumar.
