A radiologist and two others have been booked for allegedly conducting pre-natal sex determination tests at a clinic in south-east Delhi’s Jangpura area. “A case has been registered at Nizamuddin police station and is being investigated. No arrest has been made yet”, said Romil Baniya, DCP of South-East District.
Delhi police had received a tip-off from officials in Haryana’s Sonepat district about the clinic conducting ultrasound tests to determine the sex of the foetus.
The police then sent a pregnant woman as a decoy to trap the offenders on Saturday. The assistants of the radiologist were conducting an ultrasound on her when policemen raided the clinic.
The raid was jointly conducted by the officials of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques cell of Delhi and Haryana.
While the owner of the clinic, radiologist Dr Charu Kohli is travelling abroad, an MBBS sonologist and two others who were in the clinic at that time have been booked. The ultrasound machine has also been sealed.
Programme Officer of PC-PNDT, Delhi, Sajyajit Kumar said the clinic is registered with their department. “An FIR has been registered under the PC-PNDT Act. We have also submitted an inspection report to the district magistrate, citing the violations committed by the clinic for further action,” he said.
