One hears about harassment of girls in public places everyday but what affects a person deeply is when it happens personally and police fail to come to rescue. This is an account of my horrific experience which happened just two days before the 4th anniversary of the horrendous Nirbhaya gangrape incident.
I became a victim of rude and obscene behaviour of men standing in a queue at an ATM in Pushp Vihar on December 12. I had gone there with a female friend to withdraw money.
As I felt insecure to stand among men, I requested the ATM guard to allow a separate queue for women. The men then turned abusive. “Why you women need a separate line; there is no provision for a separate line for women,” a man shouted.
Another shouted, “I am a Government official but never asked for a separate line. Why do women always give so many excusesIJ You should sit at home if you cannot stand in a common queue. We will not allow you to make a separate line.”
Bizarre was to follow, when I sought help from guard, he quipped, “Madam, main isme kuch help nahin kar sakta, (I cannot help you in this).”
Then, I made a call on 100 (Police Control Room) at 10.32 pm. I was told a PCR will be reach me in ten minutes. After waiting for another 15 minutes, I called them again and this time another official picked up the phone and asked again about the incident and location.
I made 10 calls to PCR but no police man or PCR can came to my rescue. Having failed in my attempt to get police help, I deemed it fit to leave the place as men were getting increasingly offensive.
