Assam Governor invites Sonowal to form Govt

Assam Governor PB Acharya on Sunday invited the BJP-AGP-BPF alliance to form the next Government in the State.

The development came after a delegation of the BJP and its alliance partners led by BJP’s chief ministerial candidate, Sarbananda Sonowal, on sunday met the Governor at Raj Bhavan here and staked claim to form the Government. Sonowal handed over to the Governor the list of 60 BJP legislators, who had elected him as the leader of BJP legislature party.

AGP president Atul Bora also submitted to the Governor a list of its 14 candidates and their consent letters to support the BJP. Similarly, BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary also handed over to the Governor the list of 12 BPF legislature and a letter giving their consent to support the BJP.

With the support of AGP and BPF, the strength of the BJP led alliance is 86 in the 126-member House. While the BJP had won 60 constituencies in the Assembly polls, the AGP and BPF had won 14 and 12 constituencies respectively.

Prior to this the BJP held the first meeting of its elected leaders where Sonowal was unanimously elected as the legislature party leader. While Himanta Biswa Sarma proposed the name of Sonowal as their leader in the House, several other MlAs including Atul Bora, Prashanta Phukan, Angoorlata Deka etc. supported the Sonowal’s name.

Sonowal addressed the newly elected BJP leaders after the meeting and said although he was given the responsibility of the legislature party leader, he would work as one of the MlAs in the House in close coordination with everyone.

He said that everyone had to work as a team and fulfil the expectation of the people of Assam, who had given a historic mandate by electing 60 legislators of the party in the election.

“I have spoken to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday and he has extended his best wishes to all of us and asked us to work in a team so that peoples’ expectations are fulfilled,” Sonowal said.

He said that implementation of the Assam Accord will be one of his top priorities in the coming days.
