In a shocking mishap that caused a security scare among the families of Naval officers, as many as 20 two-wheelers and four cars were gutted when a major fire broke outside one of the buildings housing officers of the Indian Navy at Colaba in south Mumbai.
However, there was no loss of life or injury or damage to the building in the mishap.
The incident happened outside one of the buildings at the Naval Officers’ Families Residential Area (NOFRA) at Colaba in the wee hours of Sunday.
The fire presumably started at about 2.30 am and quickly spread to neighbouring vehicles. One fire tender from the Navy and one from Colaba Fire Station rushed to the spot. “The fire was brought under control by 3.15 am.
“Twenty two-wheelers and four cars were damaged. There was no loss of life or injury or damage to the building,” a Defence Ministry spokesperson said on Sunday.
The preliminary investigations have revealed that the sparking from a motorbike parked outside one of the buildings at the NOFRA caused. “The CCTV footage shows sparking from a motor bike as cause of fire. Further investigation is in progress,” the spokesperson added.
