This girl can!

Ami Trivedi steps into the role of the lady of the house in TV series Tedi Medi Family. In a chat with Shrabasti Mallik, she lists the reasons why the show is different from other comedy sitcoms

Many know her as the bubbly Kituu from Kituu Sab Janti Hai and some know her as Kokila from the popular comedy sitcom Papad Pol. Now, TV sitcom lovers can see Ami Trivedi in a whole new avatar in Tedi Medi Family (TMF) on BIG Magic, an Indianised version of the popular American show The Middle. The show is about a dysfunctional middle class family, who go through the ups and downs in life together. The protagonist of the show is the lady of the house, popularised by Patricia Heaton in The Middle.

A few episodes into the show and Trivedi is enjoying every minute of it. Not only because it is a comedy show but also because the daily activities which the children engage in and the troubles that the family goes through are all very relatable. Said the actress, “Right from the characters to the sets to the situations — everything has been kept as real as possible, so that when people see it, they identify with them. There are times when the washing machine breaks down or you burn your toast or you leave the iron over a shirt and it burns — these are things that go wrong almost everyday. The story revolves around a Pune-based family and how they get through the day.” The show, she mentioned, is not just another run-of-the-mill slapstick comedy but also teaches certain values of life like bonding with the family and to speak the truth.

The actress, who had to prepare for her earlier roles on television, did not have to work too hard to get into the shoes of her character, who is a Gujarati. “I am a Gujarati myself but that was not the reason why I did not need any preparation. The sole reason the role is fun to do is because it is an extended version of my real family life — running to get the groceries and worrying over household things,” she said.

Ask Trivedi if she has watched The Middle and she quickly responds with a “No.” She hadn’t watched the show before being offered the role but started watching it out of curiosity. “I wanted to know how different comedy shows, involving a family, are in the west,” she concluded.
