Despite a number of vocational courses run by the Ranchi University (RU) placement of students from these courses seems to be farfetched dream. The situation is such that very few companies have shown interest in the ongoing academic session for hiring students. In order to attract more companies, the placement cell authorities have personally inviting them.
Moreover, not even half of the targeted candidates for the interview are absorbed by the companies. Pro-vice chancellor M Raziuddin refers the condition same in all the State universities of Jharkhand.
“Till date, we have not been able to establish a good reputation of students in the professional world. Unless companies do not have faith on us, they cannot count our students in their eligible candidates list,” he said.
“Afterall, we are not producing professionals. Graduates and post graduates students are being produced,” he pointed.
Sources in the university blame the changing of placement in-charges for the ‘communication-gap’ between the university and companies.
“I have joined seven or eight months back. It will take time to create a healthy relation with corporate houses. As of now, I am trying to invite private banks, multi-national companies and foundations for our general and vocational subject students. Only one or two companies have confirmed their participation,” Assistant Placement Coordinator Abhijeet Beltharia said.
As per the placement cell data, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and EXl Services have visited the campus early last month wherein around 14 general graduates were selected out of a target of 30 to 40 candidates for Business Process Outsourcing jobs. The average salary of the selected candidates ranges from Rs1.5 to 2.5 lakhs per annum.
“Our students lack fluency in spoken English. However, companies also test the technical knowledge of candidates which makes it easy for students to get selected,” Beltharia said.
Wipro is the only company that shows self-interest towards the university. A two-day campus drive of the private company was hosted for the Masters of Computer Applications students from December 15. Seven students were hired here.
As an impact of University’s invitation, Azim Premji Foundation is likely to visit here in the month of March or April for recruiting post-graduate students.
This will be the second time when the renowned foundation is willing to select RU students. larsen and Toubro (l&T) is also expected to hold a graduate commercial training for the graduate students in January. Students selected in such placements, feel it is merely the ticket of grabbing initial job experience.
“I am happy but not satisfied with my selection in TCS, Kolkata. Being a fresher I would like to get one or two year experience in TCS and then try my luck in companies offering handsome salary package and promotion benefits,” said Anindita Kar, a final year student in BSc Zoology at Nirmala College, Doranda.
Similarly, Rakhi Sahu, a post-graduate in Mass Communication said university’s placement wing has not done much for their internship and placement.
“I pursued a vocational degree at RU. Despite this, university did not offer us jobs. So, I am appearing in various government job examinations,” she said.
