BJP leader and former Brahmapur Municipal Corporation (BMC) Mayor Shiv Shankar Das was arrested by the Brahmapur police on Thursday evening in connection with his involvement in an attempt-to-murder case.
According to sources, an attempt was made to kill BJD leader Alekh Choudhury’s son Chetan, a lawyer, by setting a car to crush him near Gosaninuagaon while he was walking down to his home on June 22 last year.
later, the police had arrested three persons including the driver of the vehicle and its owner. The accused had confessed before the police that they had attempted to run over Chetan from behind on directions from Das.
Das had earlier obtained an anticipatory bail from the High Court in the case which has expired in the meantime. The High Court had asked him to report at the local court, but he didn’t do that.
Meanwhile, BJP workers alleged that Das has been arrested to settle political score ahead of the bypoll to Ward number 26 of the BMC scheduled for March 11.
