The inmates of Model Jail, Burail can now spend more time with their near and dear ones as the authorities have decided to make changes in the visiting rules. AS Cheema, IG Prisons, Model Jail Burail, said the department has decided to increase the limit of weekly visits by the relatives of inmates which has been increased from one to two every week.

“Instead of one visit per week for five minutes, as outlined in the Prison Act, the limit will be increased to two times per week, five minutes each,” said the IG Prisons. A letter in this regard has been sent to the UT Admini-stration and further action will be taken after the response of the Administration, he added.

The authorities are also planning to install special phone for jail inmates with which they can contact their near and dear ones. The telephones will be paid and the inmates will have to insert a coin and dial a number of their relatives. A guard will also be deputed near the telephones.

“Many inmates had completed their Bachelor as well as Masters degree recently and this will surely develop positive behavioral changes among the inmates. More and more inmates want to follow the way of education for their reformation and rehabilitation, which is the ultimate goal of our Department,” said Cheema.

Burail Jail has a study centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University and the prison has tied up with the UT Education Department. Nearly 700 prisoners are lodged in the jail including many dreaded criminals.
