KISS wins Callaghan Cup Div-II Rugby Cup

Bhubaneswar: In the nail biting final match Kalinga Institute of Social Science (KISS) edged out Bangalore RFC by 27-23 and emerged champion of the Callaghan Cup Div-II Rugby Tournament, which concluded at Kalinga Stadium here on Friday, being organised by Odisha Rugby Football Association. Alekha Murmu of the champion team netted three tries. His-mate Rajendra Samad and Niranjan Biswal scored a try each. Bhubaneswar RFC defeated Chhattisgarh by 65-5 points and finished third. Surendra Jena, Dhiren Kumar Rout, Shenbaz Ahamad, Subhram Narayan Mohanty and Vikrant Rout of Bhubaneswar netted double tries each. Birel Bisra, Sagar Marandi and Ranjan Kumar Sahu netted a try each. The top four finishers KISS, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar and Chhattisgarh entered the Callaghan Cup division-I tournament schedule to held at Mumbai in September, said ORFA secretary Upendra Kumar Mohanty. In the plate group final, Bhubaneswar Bulls pipped Kashis RFC by 5-0 and bagged the title. CRPF DIG AK Khuntia, MlA Priyadarshi Mishra, MlA Bijaya Kumar Mohanty and Ashok Kumar Mohanty were present in the closing ceremony.

KIIT University storms into SPl semis

Bhubaneswar: KIIT University stormed into the semifinal of the SOA Premier league (SPl) cricket tournament trouncing Gitam University by 87 runs in their concluding Group-B match at the SOA University Stadium here on Friday. Winning the toss, KIIT hit up 235 for three in the allotted 20 overs with the aid of a whirlwind 111 off 41 balls by Samaresh Routray (13x4, 6x6) and then routed Gitam for 148 in 19.4 overs with Anurag Prustry claiming four wickets conceding 27 runs. Routray was helped by Sumit Das (59, 10x4) and Jigmay (34, 1x4, 4x6) while Chandrasekhar and Chandu claimed one wicket apiece for Gitam conceding 28 and 13 runs respectively. Despite a 28 ball 63 by Sai Dinesh, Gitam were never in the hunt and folded up for 148 in the 20th over. Dinesh hit ten boundaries and three sixes. Samaresh claimed one wicket for KIIT for 32 runs. Earlier in the morning, IIIT, Bhubaneswar got a walk-over when lovely Professional University did not turn up for their Group-C encounter.

Brief score: KIIT University: 235/3 in 20 overs (S.Routray 111 (41b, 13x4, 6x6), S.Das 59 (44b, 10x4), Chandu 1/13, Chandrasekhar 1/28) beat GITAM University 148/10 in 19.4 overs (Sai Dinesh 63 (28b, 4x10, 3x6), Abhilash 26 (14b, 2x4, 2x6), A.Prustry 4/27, S.Routray 1/32) by 87 runs.

Territorial Army win National Cycle Polo meet

Bhubaneswar: Territorial Army emerged champion in the senior group by defeating Kerala by 14-8 in the three-day-long 31st Sub-Junior Boys, 35th Junior Boys and 37th Senior Men National Cycle Polo Championship, which concluded at Kalinga Stadium here on Friday, being organised by Bhubaneswar Cycle Polo Association in association with Odisha State Cycle Polo Association. Similarly, Chhattisgarh and Kerala won the sub-junior and junior title by defeating Kerala and Maharashtra by 9-2 and 9-6 respectively. Harsha Bhogle of Territorial Army and Fizal of Kerala won the best player and upcoming player in the senior event respectively. Harsha also won the top scorers of the meet award. Dushyant of Chhattisgarh and Aman of West Bengal received top scorer and best palyer award in the sub-junior category. In the junior category Himanshu Singh of Uttar Pradesh received the best upcoming player of the tournament. Territorial Army Commandant Vinit Mital distributed the prizes as the chief guest of the closing ceremony. Among others, Cycle Polo Federation of India secretary Gajanan Burde, Vice-president Giris Parmar, treasurer Ml Nayak, executive member R Satya Narayan, Raj Kishor Mohanty and organising secretary Manoj Kumar Nishank were present.
