The winter migratory birds have started arriving at the Bhitarkanika National Park this year for breeding and nesting, said forest official sources.
With the onset of winter, the Bhitarkanika park has slowly been wearing a colourful look because of the arrival and cacophony of the avian guests. Nearly, 2,000 winter avian species have recently arrived at the park.
Notably, the shore bird species like sand piper ,pintail, godwit, pelican , grey plover and seagull have started thronging the park and have built nests on branches of different mangroves trees near Satabhaya, Barunei Muhana ,Chataka, Praharajpur and Raitapatia.
Every year, during the onset of winter, various types of winter migratory birds as well as residential bird species throng the Bhitarkanika park for nesting and breeding. As the park provides a congenial atmosphere for the birds to settle down for breeding and nesting, they fly thousands of miles to escape the harsh winter in Siberia, Afghanistan, Iraq, northern Asia and some central European countries. They generally stay in Bhitarakanika for about three- four months before starting their homeward sojourn.
