Verdant Dadaraghati hills' potential not tapped

Friday, 12 December 2014 | SRIKANTA K TRIPATHY | BHUBANESWAR

The Tourism department is apathetic to the development of many small but important tourist sites in Dhenkanal district. The neglect to maintain the beauty and cleanliness of Dadarghati dam site speaks volume about it.

The Dadaraghati minor irrigation project near Parjang is a most sought-after spot for the picnickers around the New Year time. Its verdant hills, lush forests, blue water expanse and pristine silence woo the nature lovers and people seeking to arrange banquet away from the fret and fever of the busy world. Starting from November to March, thousands drop in at the spot for picnicking.

The dam has very easy accessibility by road. The NH connecting Pitiri to Pallahara goes by it. The winter is one of the best times to throng the spot as during the time the surrounding looks very soothing. The water in the dam attracts many domestic fowls adding  to its beauty.

The forests surrounding the dam are the places where generally the feasts are arranged. The foods are cooked inside the tree clusters. The matter of worry is while there is no safety and security in the spot, the authorities are least bothered about accumulation of filth during the peak of picnicking in the forests.

The Minor Irrigation department which is in charge of the dam is never careful about its maintenance. There is a police outpost near the dam site but its manpower is not enough to maintain the security of the people visiting the place. The dam’s roads, watch towers and other buildings are in tatters without timely maintenance. The place just is left forlorn and uncared-for.

The Tourism department is never awake to the tourism potential of the spot. It has not been enlisted among the tourist sites of the district as yet.
