Around 22.13 per cent of the voters cast votes in the students’ union election in MKP (PG) College held on Wednesday. “The voting passed off peacefully,” said College election officer Nilam Ghildiyal. The polling began at 10.30 am and continued till 2 pm. “A total of 23 candidates are in the fray for various posts, including president, vice president, general secretary, university representative, treasurer and executive members and as many as 2,169 students were listed in the voters’ list,” she added.

The college was abuzz with students as they were witnessed standing in queues outside the polling booths in the college. Adequate police force was deployed to avoid untoward incident in the college. Students were allowed to cast votes after their admit cards were checked by the polling officer.

Vikas group leader registered a complaint before the election officer when they found some voters had written names of the candidates in their palms whom they had apparently decided to vote for in this election. But the issue was sorted out amicably. A total of 2,169 students figured in the voters’ list while 480 voters cast votes in the election. The State capital witnessed drizzle with sky remaining overcast till noon that might account for the relatively lower turnout as compared to other colleges where the elections were held recently. The election officer had made four polling booths to complete the election process in the college.

The election officer Ghildiyal said that the voters were frisked at various entries of the college and only those carrying college admit cards were allowed to get in. Two candidates each filed nomination for the posts of president, vice president, secretary, joint secretary, treasurer, university representative while 11 candidates filed nomination for the post of executive members. Aayush Thalwal of Vikas Group and Sapna Chauhan of ABVP were in the fray for the post of president while Sakshi Bhatt and Divya Punam for the post of vice president, Sapna Saklani and Mamta Rana for the post of general secretary, Rinika Negi and Animika for the post of joint secretary, Rachna and Nidhi for the post of treasurer and Varsha Arora and Aasma Ansari for the post of university representative.
