Massive fire breaks out in Mahavir Nagar tyre godown

Sunday, 13 April 2014 | Staff Reporter | Raipur

A massive fire engulfed a tyre tube godown situated in Mahavir Nagar on Saturday afternoon. More than 50 tankers of water were used in dousing the raging blazes and it would be by Saturday-Sunday mid-night that "we would be able to completely extinguish the fire," informed Fire Superintendent Moinudding Ashrafi.

According to the fire superintendent, they got information about the fire incident around 2.30 pm. "When we reached the spot we found that a huge area of tyre godown situated in the residential area in Mahvir was engulfed in flame and smoke. We had to deploy our 10 out of 15 fire tenders to control the fire," he said.

The blaze and dense smoke rising several feet high was controlled in three hours, however, the work to extinguish the fire in the godown was still on, Ashrafi said. Smoke emanating from the godwon had enveloped a large part of Mahvir Nagar. According to locals, on several occasions they had made complaints with the administration to remove the godown from the area, however, no action was taken on the complaints. Four JCBs were being used to break the wall of the godwon sprawling over an area of about a thousand square feet, and the firefighters were working to put out the fire till the filing of report.
