High drama prevailed at the Municipal Corporation office, when newly elected Chandigarh MP, Kirron Kher gave her debut speech in the general house meeting on Friday.
As the newly elected MP started speaking in the house, the Congress councillors started shouting slogans against her, for delivering a tailor-made speech. The irked councillors alleged that Kher, who has been elected by the people of the city, is not aware about their problems.
In her 30 minutes speech, Kher addressed the general problems faced by the residents of City Beautiful. She said that she will focus on providing better facilities to the denizens and the new houses will be constructed for the slum dwellers.
However, the Congress councillors who are trying to pounce every opportunity to ridicule the BJP, challenged Kher’s authority of attending the house meeting as she has still not taken the oath of Member of Parliament from the constituency of Chandigarh.
According to the rules, councillors can attend proceedings at the municipal corporation only after taking oath in the house. Same is the case with the MPs. The oath taking ceremony of the new MP is yet to take place. Pradeep Chabra, a Congress councillor said, “The matter should be clarified on whether the newly elected MP should be allowed to take part in the proceedings of the MCC house when the person has not taken oath.”
When Kher condemned the behavior of the Congress Councillors, Chabra retorted by saying that recordings of previous house meetings should be presented to the new Minister so that she can get hang of the situation as to how the BJP councilors behaved when they were in opposition.
However, Satya Pal Jain, Chairman of the National and legislative Affairs Committee of the BJP intervened and said that once the MP is elected they automatically become member of the Municipal Corporation House and hence, Kher has a right to attend the meetings.
Despite the cacophony that prevailed in the house, due to the protest of the Congress Councillors, Kher completed her speech in the house by 12 pm. During the further proceedings of the house, the Mayor said that special operations will be launched to control the increasing stray dog menace in the city. VP Singh, Commissioner of MCC said, it is necessary to carry out a sterilisation drive of the stray dogs to keep their population under control.
