Saturday, 31 May 2014 | PNS | Lucknow

Facing attack from almost all political groups who demanded a probe by Central Bureau of Investigation, chief minister, Akhilesh Yadav, took serious note about the Badaun gang rape incident. He ordered to get the trial conducted in fast track court besides both the constables accused in the crime have been dismissed from services. Akhilesh also announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the victim girls, besides he warned the officials of stern action is any such incident has been repeated anywhere.

Terming the incident as unfortunate, he asked the officials to make the incident as an example to punish the guilty by expediting the case in fast track court. In a review meeting with the DGP A l Banerjee and other senior officials on the incident of Badaun, the CM directed the officials to arrest the remaining accused in the case. The CM also asked the officials to provide adequate security to the victims family besides ask them to give financial assistance. He also asked the DGP to prevent such incidents in future. State government also sent a report to the Ministry of Home Affairs, informing that the matter is under probe and stern action have been taken to punish the accused. They also informed about formation of special teams to arrest all the accused at earliest.

Meanwhile a report from Badaun said that the proposed visit of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi has been cancelled due to denial of permission by the SPG at the last moment.  A three- member team of the National Commission for Women(NCW) led by Samina Safi visited the Katra village and met the family members of the victims and the villagers. The team would submit their report to the chairperson at New Delhi. The other members of the team are Sudha and Hemlata. Another team of Congreess, lead by their legislative Party leader, Pradeep Mathur, also visited Badaun and the Party would further initiate action after the team would submit it’s findings.

Reacting on the incident, Union Women and Child Welfare Minister, Menaka Gandhi, while blaming police laxity leading to horrific incident, claimed that a “rape crisis cell” will be constituted for speedy action on such incidents under her ministry. Menaka also assured that if the family members of the two girls want, she would recommend a CBI probe into the incident. “Police laxity is equally responsible for the incident due to which two girls lost their lives. Police is still not acting in the right direction. All policemen involved in the incident should be terminated,” she told media persons. “If the girls’ famly members want a CBI probe, I will recommend it,” she added.

Meanwhile the district police chief of Badaun, Atuk Saksena, claimed to have sacked head constable Chandrapal Gangwar and constable Sarvesh Yadav, whose names figured in the FIR and their role has also found to be suspicious. The action came three days after the girls were gang raped and their bodies were found hanging from a tree.  “One more accused Awadhesh Yadav has been arrested by the police,” he said. Of the seven wanted in the case, three (policeman Sarvesh Yadav

and brothers Pappu and Awadhesh Yadav) have been arrested so far, he said. Sarvesh and Pappu were arrested on Thursday. Four others Urvesh Yadav (brother of Pappu and Awadhesh), policeman Chhatrapal Yadav and two unidentified persons are still at large.

The two girls, who were cousins and aged 14 and 15, went missing from their house on the night of May 27 and their bodies were found hanging from a mango tree in the Katra village in Ushait area of Badaun on the next morning. The incident had triggered protests in the area with villagers alleging police apathy, following which an FIR was registered

against seven persons.  The postmortem report of the two girls suggested that the victims might be raped. The cause of death is, however, asphysxia due to anti-mortem hanging which pointed that the two were not killed before they were hanged.
