A new gate for the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary was inaugurated at Dhaulchina by Almora MlA Manoj Tewari on Friday.
Dhaulchina lies on the 18 kilometres trek route from Binsar, 0 Point to Jageshwar temple on the outskirts of the Binsar wildlife sanctuary. The six km trek route from Binsar to Dhaulchina passes along Katdhara and Gonap villages. local villagers and a commercial enterprise have established guest houses and home stays at both Katdhara and Gonap.
Now tourists interested in hiking or going to these rural tourism villages will be able to enter the wildlife sanctuary through this gate and will not need to travel to Ayarpani, where the main gate of Binsar wildlife sanctuary is located. Annually, more than 1000 tourists enter Binsar on foot from Dhaulchina. The establishment of the gate at Dhaulchina will lead to better protection by regulation of people entering the wildlife sanctuary on foot from Dhaulchina and also lead to generation of additional revenue.
Binsar wildlife sanctuary is one of the last remaining patches of natural Oak forests in Middle Himalaya in Uttarakhand. It has attracted and inspired authors including Sachchidananda Hirananda Vatsyayan ‘Ajneya’. A total of 15,807 visitors came to Binsar during April 2013- March 2014 generating a total revenue of Rs 32.68 lakh. This was 25 per cent less than in 2012-2013 that saw 20,264 visitors generating a revenue of Rs 42. 01 lakh.
