The authorities of the Women and Child Development (WCD) Department of Gajapati district have rescued 32 minor children, including 10 girls, from Karnataka.
Of the 32 minor children, 18 are from Gajapati district, 12 from Kandhamal and two from Sambalpur. They are of the age group of nine to 14 years.
The children were taken to Karnataka on the pretext of imparting education to them. However, the concerned school authorities had kept them in an unhygienic atmosphere.
Families of the children had sought the help of the district administration after they came to know about their pitiable conditions. The issue was taken up with the Karnataka Government and later, a team of the district police, accompanied by district WCD member Pramod Nayak, went to the school in Karnataka and rescued the children, sources said.
