Pregnant nurse hangs self in Pashchim Vihar

A 27-year-old nurse, who was in an advanced stage of pregnancy, allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her house in West Delhi’s Pashchim Vihar area in the wee hours of Friday. The police received a call at around 2.30 am about the incident following which a team rushed to the house where the nurse identified as Princy lived with her husband Seju.

A case of subjecting a woman to cruelty by her husband under Section 498a IPC and culpable homicide under Section 304 IPC has been registered and the accused husband was arrested by the police. Princy, who hailed from Kerala, was taken to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. She worked as a nurse in a hospital in the locality while her husband Seju ran a South Indian restaurant in the area and supplied food in two hospitals. No suicide note has been recovered from the spot, police said, adding, prima facie, it seems to be a case of suicide but the exact cause is being ascertained.

“It has so far not emerged that there was anything seriously wrong between the couple. They had small tiffs like every other married couple. There was no prior police complaint about any quarrel from Princy but what caused her to take the extreme step is not known,” police said.

The couple got married in 2011 and as they were married for less than seven years, an SDM inquiry has been initiated in the case, a senior police official said. Under Section 174 of the CrPC, if a woman dies within seven years of her marriage, an SDM inquest is initiated in the case. If the SDM suspects foul play, he can direct the police to file an FIR and probe the case. Their neighbours have told investigators that the couple did not interact much with them. Meanwhile the family members of the deceased alleged that Seju was allegedly having an affair with a nurse working with Balaji Hospital.

“Seju’s mother was also shielding her son. last week on Saturday they had their train tickets booked for Ernakulum. Seju had left home on Friday evening saying he was going on a tour. It was only when my sister found things amiss, she made a complaint and police discovered him at his parents’ place,” said Wilson, Princy’s brother. He further added that on Thursday night, Seju had demanded around Rs 3.5 lakh for hospital expenses. “She spoke to me last at 12.31 am and she asked me to come quickly. She was to be admitted to the hospital on Friday,” said Wilson.
