Delhi’s most wanted snatcher Shakil Ahmad, who carried a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, and had allegedly committed more than 200 chain snatching in the national Capital has been arrested along with his aide Amit after a brief chase.

Shakil was one of the two chain snatchers who had opened fire on police on April 28 in which two passersby sustained bullet wounds. While Shakil managed to flee, his associate Dhananjay, alias Dhiraj, alias Pathan was arrested. Following this, police launched an all out offensive to nab Shakil.

During investigation, police deployed sources in East and North-East Delhi to track his movement. All kinds of technical and physical surveillance were used to pin him down. Several raids were conducted to trace their hideout. Acting on a tip-off that Shakil might be present in a house in West Gorakh Park area of Welcome area, a trap was laid at 7 pm. After a daylight chase and scuffle, Shakil and his associate Amit were arrested along with two countrymade pistols and three live cartridges. Forty grams of heroin too was recovered from Shakil.

“A case under appropriate Sections has been registered at Welcome police station,” said a police official. The gang used to snatch gold chains from women and men.  In case of resistance, they used to whip out their pistols and never hesitated to open fire. The snatchers on one motorcycle did the mugging and the second motorcycle followed them to help them get away in case of scuffle or resistance.
