The actor talks to Divya Kaushik about offers flooding in after his first film Kai Po Che. He wants to focus on good stories and is ready for television too
It took him over six years, to bag his first Bollywood project. Even after his work on the telly, it hadn’t been easy to get in movies. He went through the audition grind for his first film role in Kai Po Che. Thanks to Abhishek Kapoor’s film, he is now on the ‘promising actors’ grid.
He seems to be taking time with new projects, without losing focus on good stories. And he has already signed two films. One is a romantic comedy with Disney UTV.
He shared, “I am glad the film was appreciated. When you work hard for six years to get something, seeing the end product on screen and being applauded is worth the experience,” said the actor, who was born in Delhi.
He completed schooling in lucknow and was always a keen sportsman. Then bitten by the acting bug, he went to lee Strasberg Theatre Institute, New York, to complete a two-year acting course.
He began his career with a tv series, Kyun Hota Hai Pyarr. Reality shows like Bigg Boss and Nach Baliye got him attention, but he was looking at Bollywood.
“I thank TV for giving me initial training. The advantage is that it’s a mass medium. People can relate to you. I credit TV for lessons I learnt early in my career. Even now, after great offers, I don’t have apprehensions doing it. But after Kai Po Che I want more films. I already signed two. One with Disney UTV will present me differently.” He added that he is never afraid of getting tied down by an image in the industry.
“People who have seen my work, would know my USP is versatility. I mould myself as per the character. I look forward to do different roles as that would help me grow as an actor,” he added. Amit played the emotional Omi in Kai Po Che. He stated, “I am a sensitive sort in real life. Omi had to be happy-go-lucky, then get politicised and turn vengeful.”
As for Bollywood, his dream is to work with Amitabh Bachchan, among many others. “I think my career would be incomplete without that. I have always idolised him,” he concluded.
