Students of Govind Vidyalaya inspired to pursue science

A total of 50 students of Class IX and X from Govind Vidyalaya, Tamulia accompanied by two teachers, Ajay Kumar and Anjum Firdous Arra visited CSIR-NMl, Jamshedpur on June 14, 2013 and interacted with the scientists and research fellows this morning under the aegis of School-NMl interactive programme (SNIP). The students were thrilled to visit the laboratory and interact with the working scientists.

“The visit taught me to look at things differently and science from a new dimension. I want to pursue science in a more meaningful way. Thanks to CSIR-NMl,”  Anu Singh, Std X student said. “The visit has given me more clarity in pursuance of my future goal,” Md. Abdul Aziz, a Std X student of Govind Vidyalaya, Tamulia said after the laboratory visit.

Most of the students were happy to express how the visit to the lab helped in improving their attitude towards science. “Every information provided at CSIR-NMl were new and motivating,” said Md. Sajjad Ansari, a Std. X student. Nisha Perween , a class IXth student narrated how it increased her interest towards scientific research career. Noushin Shoaib said, “I came to know about many things which I barely knew earlier. It was a wonderful experience rejuvenating my thought process.” Another Std. X student, Pratik Ranjan said, “We are surprised to know about a number of materials that we use everyday were CSIR products.”

Ajay Kumar Gupta was excited to learn about the role played by CSIR in the mint menthol based industry where India is the largest producer displacing China, providing employment to four crore people of India and the Fly Ash based technology which is used for making pavement blocks and ceramic tiles. He felt science can change our life quality. Therefore, he felt his “career in science can have some societal impact in near future.”

Dr. N. G. Goswami, Chief Scientist and Head, IMDC and Coordinator of the programme said “The programme was scheduled for three and a half hours which comprised of an overview of Indian Science and Technology, Documentary film show on CSIR and NMl, visit to NMl Museum/ Archive/ selective units of the laboratory to have an exposure of modern laboratory research environment.”
