Saturday, 29 June 2013 | KAHNU NANDA | JAGATSINGHPUR

A middle aged woman Rama Mani Behera and her two children Pratima and Rakesh sustained injuries after they were attacked by Sahaji Das owing to a land dispute at Madhubana area on the Paradip outskirts on Wednesday. Ironically, when the victim woman wanted to lodge a complaint against Das at the Paradip police station, the police refused to accept the FIR.

Reports said that the victim woman’s husband Pradip Behera, a vegetable vendor of Binapani colony near Madhubana, has been staying with his family for the last few years. Accused Das is his neighbour.

But trouble erupted when Behera proposed to construct a dwelling house on a land. Das opposed it vehemently claiming that the land belongs to him.

Earlier, when a dispute had occurred between Behera and Das over the land, the local people had made a compromise between them by deciding that Behera must pay Rs20,000 to Das if he wanted to use the land.

Obeying the decision, Behera had paid Rs20,000 to Das and obtained a money receipt. But, later, on many occasions, Das created troubles and did not allow Behera to construct his house on the land still claiming that the land belongs to him.

According to the victim woman, on Wednesday afternoon, in absence of her husband, the accused attacked her and her two children threatening them to vacate their house and leave the locality.  Only when the locals interfered that the trio was rescued. Soon, they were sent to the Biju memorial hospital for treatment.

A few women leaders under the banner of Biswa Mahini Paradeep Port Women’s Workers Trust led by its president Binati Padhihari took the victim woman to the Paradip police station for lodging a complaint, but the police refused to accept the FIR. On the contrary, they advised the victims to vacate the land. later, the victim woman met SP SB Bhoi in his office. Bhoi assured her all-out support.

Meanwhile, reports said that the disputed plot comes under the Paradip Port Trust (PPT) jurisdiction and it has been under illegal possession of the occupants. Even the surrounding colony has been built on the PPT land.
