Saturday, 27 April 2013 | Dipankar Mukherjee | Bhopal

long standing desire of State capital residents to have a cricket stadium where international matches will be played is soon going to be fulfilled. Barkatullah University (BU) is preparing to construct State capital’s first international cricket stadium soon.

Notably, BU administration has got the approval of Executive Council (EC) and university court for the project. The EC had approved Rs1 crore budget for the initial preparation for the construction of the stadium. later, on the initiative of court member and MlA Arif Aqeel, the amount was increased to Rs2 crore.

University administration has earmarked few locations in the university campus which are considered for locating stadium over there. According to sources, the foremost option for the stadium location is the vacant land behind the Sanskrit university and near to Bagh Sewania police station.

BU Registrar Sanjay Tiwari said that the land behind Sanskrit University is a preferred location as it is connected to the highway and being in a corner will not affect the university’s environment beside that more parking spaces for vehicles can be provided at that location.

Tiwari further said that the selection of location will be submitted in the next EC meeting. Besides, the initial work budget allocation proposal will be put up before EC members.

Tiwari said that though the construction of stadium is long process but the initial work for the construction is going to start in next few weeks.

According to sources, university administration is planning to spend Rs50 crore in the construction of the stadium. University administration is going to demand for the rest of Rs150 crore from union Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS), Department of Sports and Youth Welfare (DSYW), Board for Control in India (BCCI), Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) and Bhopal Division Cricket Association (BDCA).
