Actress-turned-politician Nagma confident of getting Cong ticket

Saturday, 27 April 2013 | Zafar Alam Khan | Bhopal

Film actress turned politician Nagma, who has been aspiring to contest parliamentary poll from Bhopal, has been visiting the State capital quite frequently. Having failed to contest in past two general elections, Nagma is now confident that she would get ticket from Bhopal.

Congress leader and renowned film actress Nagma whose name comes up before every election as a candidate from Bhopal, was in the city to participate in a function organised to celebrate the 73th birth day of Uttarakhand Governor Aziz Qureshi.

Nagma talked to The Pioneer in detail about her future political move and that as to why her name propel up every time from the city of lakes as the possible Congress candidate.

The actress turned leader said, “I am a Congress party worker and abide by the decision of the party leadership, wherever and whenever the party would field or ask me to campaign I would contest and or campaign forthe party.”

She said that it was in the year 2004 when the country was going for the election of 14th lok Sabha elections the Congress leadership asked me to contest from Bhopal, as at that time I was new in politics and was not having any connection with the city I refused to contest from here.

Again during the 2009 elections my name was again suggested to the party leadership as a candidate from Bhopal, but perhaps it was in the mind of the leadership that I have refused to contest from here in the past that is why the party leadership does not gave it a serious thought, she added.

She said that it is over a decade since then and now I share special relationship with the city, I have visited it many times and am impressed by the natural beauty of the city and its lovely people.

It is for sure that I would contest the 2014 parliamentary election be it from

Bhopal and any seat from Uttar Pradesh; it is the party leadership that would decide that from where I should be fielded.

She said that now I am in touch with the local people and leaders and am confident that if I contest the parliamentary elections from Bhopal I would bring back this constituency to the Congress fold. I am aware that the Congress last won this seat in the year 1989 when KN Pradhan was elected and since then this constituency is in the possession of Bhartiya Janata Party.

However it is the party leadership that has to decide whether to field me from here or not, but I am prepared to contest and confident that would also emerge victorious, said Nagma.
