As a fallout of the brutal gang-rape of a five-year-old girl in Gandhi Nagar and subsequent bungling by East district police in investigations of the case, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) of East Prabhakar was shifted out to Prime Minister’s security on Monday. Orders of his transfer were issued by the lieutenant Governor on Monday. Ajay Kumar the DCP, PM security will take over as the DCP East from Prabhakar. Similarly DCP South Chhaya Sharma has been relieved and posted at the disposal of Mizoram Government. DCP Outer, BS Jaiswal will be new DCP South while Addl CP Sanjay Kumar will take over the reins of Outer district.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police sought to allay the rumours doing rounds about Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar being sent on leave.
Delhi Police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat denied the reports saying that there was no such order from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) asking the Delhi Police Commissioner to go on leave.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has been in the forefront and demanding the scalp of Kumar, who was in eye of controversy following the rape of a five-year-old girl in Gandhi Nagar area. A senior police official said that the transfer of Prabhakar came against the backdrop of the rape incident and it was “obvious”.
East DCP Prabhakar’s continuation as DCP East became untenable after the murder of Animesh Datta, the son of Delhi’s Former Director of Prosecution. Animesh was murdered by a gang of dacoits who had barged into his house and murdered him. Dacoits then went on to rob the hapless family members. The role of local police was found wanting and there were inexplicable delays in starting the investigations. The Station House Officer (SHO) took ages to reach the spot and to make matters worse crime team and forensic expert’s wasted precious time in reaching the spot.
East district police’s inept handling of the abduction-cum-gang-rape of the minor led to a wave of protests in the Capital. It was accused that the local police did not investigate the kidnapping and subsequent rape of the girl properly. A Vigilance enquiry had indicted the station house officer of Gandhi Nagar police for dereliction of duty.
Chhaya Sharma, a 1999-batch officer who was heading South Delhi district as its Deputy Commissioner of Police, was transferred to Mizoram. DCP (Outer) BS Jaiswal, a 2001 batch officer, replaces her. Sharma headed the South district when the gang-rape of a woman in a moving bus on December 16 last year, which triggered nationwide outrage.
On Sharma’s transfer, the official said AGMU cadre officers have to serve outside Delhi also and her posting to Mizoram was due. Bhagat said the transfers were “routine”. Sanjay Kumar, an officer of 1998 batch has been posted as the new Additional Commissioner of Police. He was posted as Additional Commissioner of Police in Prime Minister’s Security. Vivek Kishore, an officer of 1999 batch who is presently the Deputy Commissioner in-charge of headquarters has also been transferred to Mizoram.
