Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann will engage in a direct dialogue with over 1100 farmers during the state’s first-ever ‘Sarkar-Kisan Milni’, scheduled to take place at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana on April 12 (Saturday). The landmark event is aimed at addressing the pressing issue of depleting groundwater reserves by promoting less water-intensive paddy varieties and innovative farming techniques.
The Milni marks a unique initiative by the Mann-led Government to bridge the gap between policy-makers and cultivators by encouraging face-to-face interactions. The event will serve as a comprehensive knowledge-sharing platform where farmers will receive firsthand information about the latest agricultural innovations and policy directions of the state government ahead of the paddy season.
A key highlight of the Milni will be the promotion of high-yielding and less water-guzzling paddy varieties approved by PAU. Farmers will be guided on adopting scientific transplant techniques that significantly reduce water consumption. The event will also serve to create awareness about the government’s decision to advance the paddy sowing season from June 1, in a zone-wise manner, to avoid issues related to high moisture content during harvesting in October.
To implement this planned sowing mechanism effectively, the state has been divided into various agro-climatic zones. Detailed cultivation calendars will be released soon, enabling farmers to plan accordingly and ensure smooth procurement. The initiative is expected to simultaneously protect the state’s depleting water table and enhance the profitability of farmers.
Renowned agricultural scientists and experts will be present at the Milni to offer guidance and practical solutions. Multiple awareness stalls will also be set up to showcase government schemes, best practices, and eco-friendly techniques.
