With the wheat harvesting season underway, the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has set up a dedicated control room to address electrical hazards that could lead to crop fires. Punjab Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO on Friday announced that the move aims to prevent fire incidents caused by loose or low-hanging wires and GO switches in wheat fields.
Farmers have been urged to report such electrical issues immediately via toll-free number 1912 or control room numbers 96461-06835 and 96461-06836. They can also WhatsApp pictures of electrical faults to 96461-06836, ensuring swift action.
Highlighting safety precautions, the Minister advised farmers not to store harvested wheat under power lines or near transformers. Additionally, he recommended cutting wheat in a one-marla radius around transformers and keeping the area moist to prevent accidental fires. Smoking near fields and tampering with electric poles using bamboo sticks or iron rods has also been strongly discouraged.
He emphasized that wheat stubble burning must be avoided to prevent pollution and accidental fires. The government has also cautioned against operating combine harvesters at night due to the increased risk of fires from sparks. Farmers are urged to be vigilant and report any mischief that could endanger wheat crops.
The Minister reiterated that PSPCL has taken proactive measures to monitor and mitigate fire risks, ensuring a safe and efficient harvest season. Officials and field staff have been directed to remain on high alert, ready to address emergencies promptly.
