Churches across Bhopal came alive with prayerful processions, hymns, and solemn liturgies as the Christian community marked Palm Sunday, the day commemorating Jesus Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem. The observance also marks the beginning of Holy Week, the most sacred period in the Christian calendar leading up to Easter Sunday.
From early morning, churches witnessed large gatherings of the faithful carrying blessed palm branches—symbols of peace and victory—as they joined in processions recalling the crowds that welcomed Christ with shouts of "Hosanna." The atmosphere was one of reverence and spiritual preparation, with each parish adding its own touch of devotion and community participation.
At Christ the King Church in Bairagarh, the celebrations began at 8:00 a.m. with the traditional blessing of palms, followed by a solemn procession. The Holy Mass was led by Rev. Fr. Maria Stephen, the parish priest, with Rev. Fr. Vipin Tigga, Procurator of the Archdiocese of Bhopal, as the main celebrant. Several priests concelebrated the Mass, including Fr. Paul Raj. Fr. Tigga, in his homily, emphasized humility, service, and Christ’s path to the Cross, urging the faithful to embrace the spirit of sacrifice and discipleship. The liturgy featured heartfelt participation, uplifting hymns, and active involvement from youth and parish groups. Fr. Maria Stephen expressed deep gratitude to all who contributed to the meaningful celebration.
In the heart of the city at St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Jehangirabad, Archbishop A.A.S. Durairaj presided over the Mass with solemnity. The celebration began with the blessing of palm branches and a ceremonial procession. In his homily, the Archbishop encouraged the faithful to walk the path of forgiveness, love, and spiritual renewal as they journey through Holy Week. The cathedral choir enriched the liturgy with moving hymns and chants.
At Assumption Church in Arera Colony, Rev. Fr. Anand Muttungal led the faithful through a procession around the parish, followed by a Mass that reflected on Christ’s kingship rooted in love rather than power. A dramatized reading of the Passion, performed by the youth group, added a powerful dimension to the service.
St Joseph’s Church in Idgah Hills also saw enthusiastic participation. Rev. Fr. Dominic Anthony led the liturgy, calling for deeper reflection on the meaning of Christ’s suffering. The choir, along with special intercessory prayers, created a deeply contemplative atmosphere.
Meanwhile, at Little Flower Church in TT Nagar, children played an active role, carrying banners and palm leaves during the procession. The parish priest spoke on the theme of following Christ through sacrifice and love, encouraging the faithful to prepare their hearts for the sacred days ahead.
Across Bhopal, the Palm Sunday celebrations stood as a powerful expression of faith, unity, and preparation for the Paschal Mystery of Easter. With active involvement from clergy, youth, and parish communities, the city’s churches offered a shared spiritual journey marked by devotion, reflection, and hope.
