A 50-year-old man was trampled to death by an elephant in a village in Chhattisgarh’s Korba district on Wednesday, an official said.
The incident occurred in Chandrauti village in the Pasan forest range when an elephant separated from its herd charged towards the house of Shamlal Singh, Katghora Divisional Forest Officer Premlata Yadav said.
Singh and other villagers tried to chase the elephant but it suddenly charged towards them. Singh fell while trying to escape and the elephant trampled him to death, the officer said. The animal is part of a herd of 23 elephants roaming in the area, Yadav said, adding that residents have been alerted and advised not to venture into the forest. The kin of the deceased were given an immediate aid of Rs 25,000 while the remaining compensation of Rs 5.75 lakh will be given after certain formalities.
