An incident of fire onboard aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya took place on Wednesday while it was at sea. The blaze was brought under control and no casualties were reported. A mandatory board of inquiry was ordered to ascertain the cause of the fire.
Giving details of the mishap, Navy officials said here during a planned sortie for conduct of trials at sea, an incident of fire was reported onboard INS Vikramaditya. The ship was operating off Karwar. The fire was brought under control by the ship’s crew using onboard firefighting systems.
It weighs more than 45,000 tons and is 284 metres in length. The ship accommodates MIG-29 fighter jets besides helicopters. The aircraft carrier was formally inducted into the Indian Navy in June 2014.
The ship had witnessed mishaps in the past with one incident reported on June 10, 2016. A sailor and a civilian worker were killed when a sewage plant they were repairing leaked.
