Woman shot dead while cooking in Sangam Vihar; husband absconding

A 30-year-old woman was allegedly shot dead by her husband while she was cooking in their kitchen in south Delhi’s Sangam Vihar area, with the accused absconding after the crime, police said on Friday. The incident took place around 4 pm on Thursday in the Tigri area. The accused has been identified as Shubham Rajput.According to police, Rajput allegedly fired four rounds at Kavita following an argument, killing her on the spot.
Preliminary investigation suggests the couple had frequent disputes and the accused had allegedly been threatening her. Crime and forensic teams inspected the spot and recovered the pistol used in the crime along with empty cartridges, police said. The body was sent for post-mortem examination, they added. Family members of the deceased alleged that Rajput had planned the murder in advance. Suresh, the victim’s brother-in-law, said that he came to know about the incident around 8 pm.
“When I reached there, I saw her body. She sustained four gunshots — one on the hand, two in the stomach and one on the neck. A pistol has been recovered. He did this with planning. He had sent his mother and brother away a day earlier so that only he is held accountable,” he alleged. Suresh also claimed that Rajput was involved in gambling activities and had accumulated debts of around `25-30 lakh.
“The deceased had a plot of nearly the same value. He used to pressure her to sell it to repay the debt, but she refused. Two to three of his friends are also involved in this crime,” he alleged.
The victim’s sister also alleged that Kavita had been facing domestic violence since the beginning of the marriage. “She used to tell me that he beat her. I asked her to leave him, but she was afraid of societal pressure. He used to threaten her often. After a fight, he shot her around 4 pm while she was making rotis for him in the kitchen,” she said.
She further alleged that Rajput had multiple extramarital affairs, including with a woman living in the same locality, which frequently led to quarrels between the couple.Police said Kavita and Rajput had married around one-and-a-half years ago and were living with his mother and brother. Investigators are examining allegations related to Rajput’s alleged affair, financial liabilities and gambling activities. A case of murder has been registered and multiple teams have been formed to trace the accused, who remains absconding. Further investigation is underway, police said.
