Thane: Man held with mephedrone drug worth Rs 3 crore

 

A 30-year-old man has been arrested for alleged possession of mephedrone, an illegal synthetic stimulant drug worth Rs 3 crore in Maharashtra's Thane city, police said on Tuesday, July 28.

Acting on a tip-off, a team from the crime branch laid a trap and intercepted the accused who arrived in an autorickshaw near Kalyan Phata around 10.30 pm on Sunday, July 26, an official said.

The team eventually recovered 1.5 kg of mephedrone drug worth Rs 3 crore from the accused, Salman Munna Shaikh, a resident of Mumbra. 

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Amarsingh Jadhav said that Shaikh was previously named in an attempt to murder case and explained that the police were ascertaining if he had been involved in drug trafficking as well.

"We have identified the individuals who supplied the narcotics to him, and the probe is progressing swiftly in that direction as well," DCP Jadhav stated. 

A case has been registered against Shaikh under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and he has been remanded to police custody till July 31, he mentioned.
