Staircase collapses in 4-storey Mumbai building, 63 people rescued safely

A major accident was averted in Mumbai’s Grant Road area on Thursday after a staircase in a four-storey residential-cum-commercial building collapsed, leaving 63 people stranded before being safely rescued by emergency teams.
According to officials from the fire department, the incident occurred at Yusuf Building located in Kharjeetji Rana Lane in Grant Road (East). The staircase between the ground and first floors suddenly gave way, with a portion of the structure left hanging dangerously.
The ground floor of the building houses commercial shops and offices, while the upper floors are used for residential purposes. Residents on the second floor were initially trapped following the collapse.
Teams from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, and 108 ambulance services rushed to the spot and carried out a coordinated rescue operation. All 63 trapped individuals — including 46 men, 12 women, and five children — were safely evacuated.
Authorities later removed unstable portions of the structure and cordoned off the area to prevent further risk. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Officials are expected to assess the structural safety of the building to determine further action.
