Sood meets athletes Anahat, Lovlina

Delhi Education and Sports Minister Ashish Sood on Tuesday met World Junior Girls Squash Champion Anahat Singh and Olympic bronze medalist and Commonwealth Games silver medalist boxer Lovlina Borgohain. The Minister pledged full Government support to develop grassroots squash facilities across the capital and build robust boxing training infrastructure, as both athletes discussed ways to expand their respective sports among Delhi’s youth.
Anahat Singh, a Delhi athlete who recently won the World Junior Girls Squash Championship, has also represented India at the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games.
During her meeting with Sood, she discussed strategies to make squash more popular and widely accessible to young people across the national Capital. Sood assured complete backing from the Delhi Government to develop grassroots facilities and expand squash programmes, giving young talent in Delhi a platform to compete globally.
Lovlina Borgohain, originally from Assam, has made Delhi her residence. She won an Olympic bronze medal at Tokyo 2020 and recently won a silver medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games. During her interaction with Sood, she expressed a strong desire to nurture boxing talent in Delhi and requested government support to build proper training facilities in the city.
Sood assured her of all required assistance and said the Delhi government will engage with active and veteran sports personalities to deliberate on modernising sports infrastructure, enhancing training centres, and creating a broader sports culture throughout Delhi.
The meetings reflect a push by the Delhi government to use India’s top sporting achievers as both advocates and potential stakeholders in the development of sports culture and infrastructure in the capital. The approach of engaging champions from specific disciplines to shape policy and facility development for those disciplines brings in practical expertise from athletes who understand the training and infrastructure requirements firsthand.
Sood congratulated both athletes for their achievements on the international stage and wished them continued success.
