Watermelon Prices Crash in Navi Mumbai After Food Poisoning Deaths, Traders Suffer Losses

Prices of watermelon have sharply declined in Navi Mumbai following the suspected food poisoning deaths of four members of a family, triggering panic among consumers and a steep drop in demand.

At the APMC Market Navi Mumbai, one of Asia’s largest wholesale fruit markets, watermelon prices have fallen to as low as ₹5–₹7 per kilogram. Traders say this is significantly below the usual wholesale range of ₹10–₹35 per kilogram, while retail prices typically hover between ₹30 and ₹100 per kilogram.

The drop in demand comes after a tragic incident last week in which four members of a Mumbai-based family died within hours of consuming watermelon at home. The victims reportedly experienced severe vomiting and diarrhoea shortly after eating.

A preliminary autopsy report has indicated suspected food poisoning as the cause of death. However, authorities are also exploring other angles, including the possibility of external factors, as part of a detailed investigation.

Forensic teams have collected samples of all food items consumed during the meal—including watermelon, chicken pulao, and drinking water—for laboratory analysis. Police have also recorded statements from guests present at the gathering, who reportedly did not fall ill despite consuming some of the same food items.

The incident has severely impacted consumer confidence, with traders reporting heavy losses due to unsold stock during peak summer demand.

Officials said further clarity on the exact cause of the deaths will emerge after forensic reports are completed.
