US announces $230 million support package for India’s M777 Ultra-Light Howitzers

The United States has announced a proposed $230 million sustainment package for India’s fleet of M777A2 ultra-light howitzers, marking another step forward in the growing defence partnership between the two countries.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the support package is ready to be concluded and reflects the strengthening strategic and military ties between New Delhi and Washington. The package is aimed at enhancing the operational readiness, maintenance and long-term performance of the artillery systems already in service with the Indian Army.
India had acquired 145 M777 ultra-light howitzers from the US under a government-to-government deal. The artillery guns are designed for rapid deployment and are particularly effective in mountainous and high-altitude regions, making them a critical asset for India's defence preparedness.
The proposed sustainment package is expected to include maintenance support, spare parts, technical assistance and logistics services to ensure the continued effectiveness of the weapon systems.
The announcement comes amid expanding defence cooperation between India and the US, with both countries increasing collaboration in areas such as military technology, joint exercises, defence manufacturing and strategic security.
Defence experts view the move as part of broader efforts to strengthen interoperability and deepen long-term military engagement between the two strategic partners.
