Trump heads to G7 Summit after announcing US-Iran Deal to end war

US President Donald Trump is heading to the French Alps for the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Evian-les-Bains after announcing an agreement aimed at ending the US-Iran conflict, a development that could significantly shape discussions among world leaders.

Trump said the agreement would lead to an end of the US blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and allow oil shipments to resume, describing it as a breakthrough that would restore global energy flows. Iranian officials, however, said key aspects of the deal remain subject to formal signing and further technical discussions.

The announcement comes amid ongoing regional tensions, with sporadic strikes involving Israel and Iran-backed groups in Lebanon continuing to raise concerns about stability in the Middle East.

The reported agreement is expected to influence the G7 agenda, where leaders are already grappling with the economic and geopolitical impact of the conflict, including disruptions to energy markets and rising global prices.

French President Emmanuel Macron, the summit host, is expected to focus discussions on the Middle East situation, including potential de-mining operations in the Strait of Hormuz and steps toward stabilising maritime trade routes.

Trump is also expected to face diplomatic scrutiny from several European leaders over his handling of the conflict and limited consultation before major strategic decisions. Despite this, the deal is being viewed as strengthening his position ahead of high-level discussions.

The summit will also include broader geopolitical discussions, including the Russia-Ukraine war. Macron has invited leaders from Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates for a special session focused on regional stability.

Separately, Trump’s comments on trade and tariffs have added further tension, including renewed warnings of high tariffs on French wine if disputes over digital taxes are not resolved.

On the Iran agreement, details remain limited, including verification mechanisms and nuclear compliance measures, with senior officials indicating that sanctions relief and economic incentives are part of the framework.

The development is expected to be a key talking point at the summit as global leaders assess its impact on security, energy markets, and long-term stability in the Middle East.
