TMC faces internal rift as MLAs claim support of nearly 50 legislators

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is witnessing a major internal crisis in West Bengal, with rebel MLAs claiming support of nearly 50 legislators, triggering speculation of a possible split within the party.
According to reports, a suspended TMC leader alleged that around 50 MLAs recently held meetings at a private location and are preparing to stake claim as the “real Trinamool Congress” in the state assembly. The group is also said to be planning to approach the Assembly Speaker with demands related to party recognition and leadership changes.
The dissenting faction has reportedly put forward proposals involving leadership roles in the assembly, further intensifying the political uncertainty within the ruling party. The development has raised concerns of a Maharashtra-style political split, where a significant group of legislators break away to form a rival faction while claiming legitimacy.
TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has strongly responded to the growing rebellion, accusing the defectors of betrayal and external political influence aimed at destabilising the party.
With internal disagreements escalating and competing claims over majority support, the situation signals one of the most serious political challenges faced by the TMC in recent years.
