Three police personnel attacked with bricks, chilli powder in Bhalswa Dairy
Three Delhi Police personnel were injured after a group allegedly attacked them with bricks and sticks and threw chilli powder into their eyes during patrolling duty in the Bhalswa Dairy area, police said on Sunday.
The incident took place around 3:30 pm on Saturday in Mukundpur, after staff from the Bhalswa Dairy police station returned to the area following the seizure of a motorcycle allegedly being driven without valid documents.
Head Constables Dinesh and Rajesh had spotted the motorcycle during patrolling and brought it to the police station for deposition. “Later, the motorcycle owner and some of his family members allegedly confronted the policemen and turned violent. The accused allegedly threw chilli powder into the eyes of the police personnel and attacked them with bricks and sticks,” a police officer said.
Head Constable Tinu, who reached the spot to assist his colleagues, was also attacked during the confrontation. All three personnel sustained injuries in the assault, with Dinesh suffering a head injury. They were provided medical treatment and are stated to be in stable condition. A video purportedly showing the assault on the police personnel went viral on social media following the incident, drawing attention to the confrontation.
With help from local residents, police apprehended a 17-year-old juvenile from the spot, while the other accused managed to flee before further arrests could be made. An FIR has been registered at Bhalswa Dairy police station in connection with the incident.
Police identified the main absconding accused as Sunil alias Pankaj, describing him as a known troublemaker in the area with five previous criminal cases registered against him. Officers said efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the remaining accused who fled the scene.
The attack occurred as police were carrying out routine enforcement action against a vehicle being driven without proper documentation, a common patrolling duty that turned violent when family members of the vehicle’s owner confronted the officers upon their return to the area.
The use of chilli powder as a weapon against the police personnel, combined with physical assault using bricks and sticks, has drawn attention to the risks faced by patrolling staff during routine enforcement duties in the area. Officials said the swift response from local residents helped in the apprehension of the juvenile accused at the scene.
The case highlights ongoing challenges faced by police personnel while enforcing traffic and documentation-related regulations, particularly in situations where family members or associates of an offender intervene and escalate what begins as a routine procedural matter into a violent confrontation.
