Daughter came second in exams, father allegedly kills her over marksheet tampering in Pune

A shocking case from Maharashtra’s Pune district has sparked outrage after a nine-year-old girl was allegedly murdered by her father following a dispute linked to school marks and marksheet tampering.
The incident took place in Daund, where police arrested the girl’s father, Shantaram Duryodhan Chavan, along with his partner Chinki Bhonsle. Investigators said the accused allegedly killed the child in a fit of rage and later attempted to burn the body to destroy evidence.
According to police, the victim, identified as Anamika, had secured second rank in her school examinations, while her stepbrother topped the class. Officials said the girl was allegedly mocked over the result, following which she reportedly altered her stepbrother’s marksheet.
What reportedly began as a dispute between children soon escalated into violence. Police alleged that the father attacked the girl using a wood-cutting machine, resulting in her death on the spot.
Investigators said the accused later wrapped the body in cloth and attempted to set it on fire. After receiving information about the incident, police recovered partially burnt remains from the spot and sent them to Sassoon Hospital for DNA testing and postmortem examination.
Police have also booked the woman living with the accused for allegedly failing to report the crime to authorities. Both accused are currently in custody, and a case has been registered at Daund police station under relevant legal provisions.
The incident has intensified concerns over child safety in Pune, especially after multiple recent crimes involving minors in the region triggered widespread public anger and demands for stricter action against offenders.
