SDRF rescues over 50 pilgrims stranded in swollen river in Uttarakhand’s Champawat

A major tragedy was averted in Uttarakhand’s Champawat district after the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued more than 50 pilgrims trapped in a swollen river during the annual Jod Mela at Sri Reetha Sahib Gurdwara.

Sudden rainfall in the region caused the water levels of the Ladhiya and Ratiya rivers to rise rapidly, leaving devotees stranded in the middle of strong currents.

Officials said the SDRF had already deployed teams at the fair venue due to the large gathering and changing weather conditions.

The advance preparation helped rescuers respond quickly when pilgrims bathing near the river confluence became trapped by the rising waters.

Several vehicles parked near the riverbed were also caught in the flooding, creating panic among visitors.

Rescue teams immediately launched an operation and safely evacuated all stranded pilgrims despite challenging conditions.

Authorities also moved trapped vehicles to safer locations and placed barriers around the area to prevent further incidents. No casualties were reported.

SDRF officials have directed all units across the state to remain on high alert as continuous rainfall continues in several parts of Uttarakhand.
