Russian drone strike kills 3 in Ukraine; Romania downs second drone in two days

A Russian drone strike killed three people in Ukraine's northeastern Sumy region on Saturday, while Romania shot down a drone that breached its airspace for the second time in two days, officials said.

Sumy regional head Oleh Hryhorov said the drone struck a civilian facility, triggering a major fire. The three victims were reportedly drivers working for Ukrainian postal and courier company Nova Poshta.

In southeastern Ukraine, a Russian drone attack on Friday night struck a shopping centre in Zaporizhzhia, causing a fire that spread across 500 square metres and injuring several people, regional head Ivan Fedorov said.

The latest attacks followed a major Russian strike on a site near Kyiv hosting a defence industry event, which killed at least 10 people and injured nearly 100 others.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that intelligence indicated Russia was preparing missiles for a large-scale attack, potentially within 48 hours.

Meanwhile, Romania's Defence Ministry said its forces had safely shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace near the Ukrainian border. President Nicuor Dan said the drone was brought down by a Romanian F-16 pilot.

The incident came a day after another drone was shot down near Padina, northeast of Bucharest.

Romania and other NATO members have reported several drone incursions since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
