CJP's Ratna Singh moves Delhi court seeking FIR against police over alleged confinement

Cockroach Janta Party's legal affairs head Ratna Singh on Saturday approached a Delhi court seeking registration of an FIR against police personnel, alleging that they wrongfully confined her and prevented her from joining a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Singh filed the application before Saket court's Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Abhinav Pandey.

According to the plea, Singh was on Saturday proceeding towards the Supreme Court with two fellow advocates to participate in a lawyers' protest when she was allegedly stopped from leaving the area outside her residence.

She claimed that two cars blocked her movement and police personnel remained stationed outside the car doors, preventing her from proceeding further.

Singh told the court that video footage of the incident could be examined as evidence. She alleged that she was being wrongfully confined and restrained, and that her life and liberty were under threat.

The application comes amid heightened tensions in the national capital over protests against Kumar and the SIR exercise.

Earlier on Saturday, a group of lawyers marching in protest against the chief election commissioner and the SIR was detained by Delhi Police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel near the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) subsequently wrote to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, raising concerns over the detention of advocates who were protesting peacefully outside the apex court and had allegedly been taken to the Yamuna Sports Complex.

Following the SCBA's intervention, the CJI communicated to the authorities that the detained lawyers should be released.
