Police dog helps crack blind rape case in Sambhal, traces scent trail to key leads

A specially trained police sniffer dog has played a crucial role in solving a blind rape case in Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal district, where investigators initially had no CCTV footage or eyewitnesses to guide the probe.
According to police officials, the incident was reported from the Babrala area of Sambhal, following which multiple teams were deployed to investigate the case. With limited forensic and technical evidence available at the scene, investigators decided to bring in a canine unit to assist in tracing possible leads.
The sniffer dog, named Mary, was taken to the crime scene and began tracking a scent trail. Officials said the dog followed the trail and helped police narrow down the suspected route and identify potential leads connected to the accused.
Based on the inputs generated through the canine tracking and subsequent police investigation, officers were able to move forward in the case and identify the accused. Authorities said the breakthrough significantly accelerated the investigation, which had initially faced major challenges due to lack of direct evidence.
Police officials highlighted that canine units are increasingly becoming an important part of investigations, especially in cases where traditional evidence such as CCTV footage, witnesses or electronic data is not available.
Further investigation is underway, and legal proceedings in the case are being followed as per procedure, police added.
