PM takes stock of cybercrime cases, flags digital arrest acams

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reviewed complaints about cybercrime and digital arrest scams. He expressed concern about the growing misuse of digital platforms for cheating. He said these cases require a coordinated, timely response from all involved, and citizens should not have to go from one agency to another for help.

During the review, the Prime Minister said there should be clear responsibility, quicker responses, and better teamwork between law enforcement, banks, and digital platforms. The Prime Minister asked all concerned agencies to work closely together to improve every step, from preventing and reporting cybercrimes to investigating and resolving complaints.

He especially urged states to accelerate the adoption of e-Zero FIR systems so cyber fraud cases can be registered more quickly.

He said citizens must not be made to run from one office to another in their hour of distress. Digital arrest scams have emerged as one of the most vicious forms of cyber fraud. Impersonating police, CBI or other agencies, fraudsters trap victims in prolonged video calls, fabricate charges, and coerce them into transferring money under threat of arrest or asset seizure. Losses have run into hundreds of crores, hitting middle-class families, senior citizens and even educated professionals. The psychological trauma is often as devastating as the financial loss.

He called for stronger public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the tactics used by such fraudsters and the steps they must take to protect themselves. The directives come at a time when cyber frauds continue to surge across the country, with digital platforms increasingly being misused by organised gangs operating from within and outside India.
