NEET UG 2026 cancelled after paper leak; Nashik Police detain accused CBI probe ordered

The National Testing Agency (National Testing Agency) has cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination held on May 3 following serious allegations of a question paper leak and examination irregularities. The decision has triggered a nationwide response, including student protests and political reactions across several states.

According to official updates, the cancellation was taken after inputs were reviewed in coordination with central agencies and law enforcement authorities. The government has also ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry to conduct a detailed investigation into the alleged malpractice.

In a major development, Nashik police have taken one of the accused into custody in connection with the alleged paper leak case. Investigators are also examining links in Rajasthan and other regions where the Special Operations Group (SOG) is already probing the matter.

The NTA has clarified that NEET-UG 2026 will be re-conducted, but fresh exam dates will be announced separately. Authorities have confirmed that candidates will not need to re-register, and existing application data, exam centres, and eligibility details will remain valid for the upcoming re-exam.

The controversy has led to widespread concern among students and parents, with demands for stricter security measures in national-level entrance examinations.
