Mumbai, Thane and Palghar on Red Alert as IMD warns of heavy rain

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few hours. The weather department's nowcast predicts intense rain spells accompanied by lightning, prompting authorities to advise residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.

Heavy overnight rainfall has already led to waterlogging in several parts of Mumbai, affecting traffic movement and disrupting normal life. Civic authorities are closely monitoring low-lying areas, while emergency teams have been deployed to respond to flooding, fallen trees and other rain-related incidents.

Commuters have been advised to check transport updates before travelling, as more showers are expected through the day.

The IMD has urged people to stay indoors during intense rain spells, avoid flooded roads and follow official advisories. With the southwest monsoon gaining strength over Maharashtra, the weather department expects widespread rainfall across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region over the coming days, raising the possibility of further waterlogging and traffic disruptions.
