MoD signs Rs 661.50 crore contract for BrahMos systems, launchers for Navy ships

The Ministry of Defence on Tuesday signed a Rs 661.50 crore contract with BrahMos Aerospace Private Limited (BAPL) for the procurement of BrahMos fire control systems and launchers for Indian Navy ships.
The contract has been signed under the 'Buy (Indian-IDDM)' category, which covers indigenously designed, developed and manufactured defence equipment, the ministry said.
The procurement is aimed at strengthening the Navy's maritime strike capabilities.
The BrahMos weapon system, fitted on various frontline warships, is the Navy's primary surface-to-surface missile system for maritime strike operations. It can engage land and sea targets from extended ranges at supersonic speeds with high precision.
The contract was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The ministry said the project has a minimum of 68 per cent indigenous content and will encourage participation by Indian industries, including micro, small and medium enterprises.
"The project will generate employment over a period of three years," it said.
The ministry said the procurement would also strengthen India's maritime security architecture and defence capabilities.
It described the contract as a "critical milestone" in the country's efforts to indigenise advanced military technology and expand domestic participation in defence production.
